Agriculture is the single largest sector of Pakistan's economy. It contributes 25% of the GDP, employees 50 per cent of the labour force and provides, directly or indirectly about 70 per cent of export earnings.
Pakistan is a major producer of agricultural products. It grows wheat, rice, cotton ,sugarcane, corn, pulses including gram , mustard, tobacco and a variety of fruits and vegetables. The Government of Pakistan has accorded top priority to increasing agricultural productivity, and to crop protection. It provides concessionary financing and has lowered customs duties and taxes on agro-chemicals, machinery and equipment. The main crops covered under the plant protection program are cotton-rice and sugarcane which require intensive pest control. In addition tobacco, fruits and vegetables and oil seeds also need pesticide applications..
